In July 2026, TROISCOULEURS was the only French-language outlet invited into Rockstar North, in Edinburgh. Rob Nelson, Head of Development on Grand Theft Auto VI, played for close to an hour in front of the journalist. Police cross-checking witness reports, a car seized and taken to the impound, cash lost on death: here is what was shown.

This material comes from the TROISCOULEURS visit to Rockstar North in July 2026, published on 27 August 2026. Rockstar Games has published nothing of the kind on its Newswire.

Last checked: 10 September 2026.

Who went inside Rockstar North, and when

The visit took place in July 2026 at the Edinburgh studio. The shape of it is simple: a private screening of about thirty minutes, then roughly an hour of play, controller in hand, by Rob Nelson himself, who narrated the mechanics as he went.

That is different in kind from everything else in circulation. An Extended Look is an edit. Here a Rockstar Games employee plays in front of a witness, gets spotted by the police, loses a car, and explains why.

The write-up and the interview were published on 27 August 2026 in French and in English, with a follow-up on 28 August covering what the session showed that the video did not. The quotes below come from there.

What stayed out of the Extended Look is exactly what makes this source useful, and it is the subject of this page. For what the video did show, see our article on the Extended Look.

Why the police in Grand Theft Auto VI are harder to shake

This is the point Rob Nelson presses hardest, and it was demonstrated live.

During the session the character trespasses into a garden. Neighbours report him. The police then cross-check several reports to establish what he is wearing. It is not a star appearing because a crime happened: it is a description assembled from witnesses.

> "So then they know what I'm wearing, but if I'm in a car, they didn't see me get it, I should be able to pass. So the law is much smarter and the systems are much more sophisticated than GTAV. So if you be careful and keep moving, it's doable, which reinforces the narrative, which is that it's about a couple on the run."

> Rob Nelson, Head of Development on Grand Theft Auto VI, Rockstar Games, TROISCOULEURS, 27 August 2026

The word that matters is "doable". The system is harder, and it remains passable, and Nelson ties that difficulty directly to the story: two characters on the run. The play constraint and the plot say the same thing.

Another observation from the session changes how a street reads. The world does not merely react to you.

> "The world is also a lot more unpredictable. You're not the only person with guns, you're not the only person capable of violence."

> Rob Nelson, same source

Two store robberies were played during the session. They did not unfold the same way, which Nelson sums up in one line:

> "You never know what you're going to find!"

> Rob Nelson, same source

What happens if you abandon your car, or die with cash on you

Two mechanics were shown during the session, and neither appears in the Extended Look.

The impound. A car abandoned during a confrontation with the police can be seized. Getting it back means breaking into an impound lot. The loss is not permanent, it becomes a job.

The cash. This is the mechanic with the most consequences for a player.

> "The cash is actually also vulnerable. You have a bank account and cash now. And so if I get wasted, and I don't deposit it, it's gone. Yes, so I'll find an ATM."

> Rob Nelson, same source

In the demonstration Nelson breaks off what he was doing to go and deposit his money. That answers a question the split between bank account and wallet had left open: what you are carrying is genuinely at risk, and the ATM becomes a regular stop.

The detail of the confirmed economy is on our page about money and income sources.

Other things the journalist recorded during the session:

  • the scooter helmet is toggled with a button, it is not automatic;
  • a visit to the barber shows substantial customisation for Lucia as well as Jason, covered on our page about customisation;
  • sand on the feet and sweat on the skin mark the character after time outdoors;
  • the game opens in the Keys, where Jason's house from the second trailer sits, before the map opens fully;
  • the game is structured in chapters.

What Rob Nelson says about the scale of the map, and what he does not

The interview covers the size of the world, and this is where this site stops while others carry on.

Nelson compares the exercise with Red Dead Redemption 2:

> "It was very challenging on Red Dead because it's a smaller map and with a lot of different sorts of regions and biomes that you have to traverse through and the way they had to blend them. The team gets better every time. They do it in a way that feels natural, but it's not one-to-one life-size."

> Rob Nelson, same source

Three things read out of that. Moving from one environment to another is a design problem, not scenery. The team considers it has improved at it. And the world is not life-size, which Nelson says himself.

The interview also contains area comparisons, expressed as ratios. We are not publishing them. This site's rule bars any map area, including one expressed relative to another game, and a figure given in an interview is still an area figure. If you are looking for that number, you will not find it here, and that is deliberate.

On enterable buildings Nelson is enthusiastic and gives no number:

> "You can enter a lot of buildings, a lot, a huge number."

> Rob Nelson, same source

That is exactly the phrasing to keep. Rockstar Games has never published a count of enterable locations, and "a huge number" is not one.

Two details round it out. Nelson says the game is set in the present day. And he names Rupert Humphries, Senior Vice President of Narrative, as the person who writes the story summary in a page and a half before the rest is built around it.

What this visit does not prove

This is the section every repost of this source leaves out.

It is not a Rockstar Games announcement. The studio has published nothing on its Newswire about these mechanics, checked on 10 September 2026. An employee narrating a session for a journalist commits his own word, not a press release.

A demonstration is not the finished game. What was played in July 2026 may change before 19 November. The mechanics described here are what existed that day, in that build.

No numeric system was described. Nelson says how you play may have an impact on some things. That is not a morality, honour or reputation system with a gauge, and we will not present it as one. The subject is handled separately on our page about the supposed morality system.

Nothing here comes from a leak. This was an authorised press session, arranged by the studio on its own premises. It has no connection to what circulated in August, and this page makes no reference to it.

Frequently asked questions

Who is Rob Nelson at Rockstar Games?

He is Head of Development on Grand Theft Auto VI. He is the person who played in front of the TROISCOULEURS journalist during the July 2026 visit and who describes the mechanics in the interview published on 27 August.

Are the police in Grand Theft Auto VI really smarter than in GTA 5?

That is what Rob Nelson says, with a demonstration behind it: neighbours report the player, the police cross-check those reports to establish what he is wearing, and changing vehicle unseen lets him through. He adds that the system stays passable if you are careful.

Can you lose your money in Grand Theft Auto VI?

Yes, cash. Rob Nelson explains that the player has a bank account and cash on hand, and that dying without having deposited the cash makes it disappear. The ATM therefore becomes a regular stop.

What happens if the police seize your car?

A car abandoned during a confrontation with the police can be seized. The journalist reports that getting it back means breaking into an impound lot.

Is Grand Theft Auto VI set in the present day?

Rob Nelson says so during the interview. Rockstar Games has not put it that way in any release, so this detail comes from the press visit.

Has Rockstar Games confirmed any of this officially?

No. None of it appears on the Rockstar Games Newswire. These are the words of a named employee, reported by a journalist who was in the room, which is a solid source and a different thing from an announcement.
