MASTER VICE CITY

Rockstar Games detailed GTA 6’s gameplay at a presentation held at its headquarters on 27-28 August 2026, alongside “Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look”. Here are the confirmed systems, and what still is not.

Two protagonists, one story

Switching between Jason and Lucia is instant, and some sequences are played as a duo: robberies, fishing, activities. The relationship is maintained through texts and shared activities, with no break-up possible, the bond is written into the story. Each has their own honour system and criminal profile.

Pick a protagonist

LUCIA CAMINOS

Close combat · Survivalist

"The only thing that matters is who you know and what you got."

JASON DUVAL

Military training · Marksman

"If anything happens, I'm right behind you."

Six stars, and a police force that investigates

Police identify the player by clothing, accessories, group size, vehicle and weapon. A crime is only reported if there is a witness, an NPC or a camera. Investigators attend the scene, and police no longer appear on the minimap during a chase.

The phone and its apps

The phone is a physical object, and each protagonist has their own. RideMe calls a driver; Waink gives the tool needed to break into a given car, its resale value and the cost of registering it. Alongside them: fitness, banking, messaging and social media, whose posts lead to real locations and real characters on the map.

Every app on the phone

Stealing is not owning

A stolen vehicle has to be registered, for a fee, before it becomes a personal vehicle. Theft difficulty varies by car, with dedicated mini-games: electronic locks, key duplicators, GPS trackers. Vehicles need fuel or charging, and motorcycle helmets are optional.

Getting around without driving

Bus stops and the RideMe app both work as fast travel, each time with the choice to ride along or skip ahead. A shortcut system selects a point of interest without opening the map, which also opens with the PS5 touchpad.

Fast travel in detail

A world that reacts

  • Convenience stores are interactive: you physically take items off the shelves before buying them, as in Red Dead Redemption II.
  • Drive-thrus are functional, and purchases grant temporary stat boosts.
  • A zoo can be visited. Jason and Lucia can go there on a date, which improves their relationship.
  • NPCs can be greeted or provoked, with reactions that vary widely from character to character.
  • Lucia defends Jason of her own accord: during the demonstration an NPC shoved Jason and Lucia hit her back with no input from the player.
  • NPC height variety goes well beyond GTA 5 and RDR2, which Rockstar presents as a significant technical challenge.
  • The density of pets in the world has been increased.

Interface, modes and customisation

  • The HUD is highly customisable: by default the minimap and money only appear briefly, but a permanent classic minimap or a compass can be switched on.
  • A Streamer mode filters copyrighted music.
  • A Photo mode is present, in the spirit of Red Dead Redemption II’s.
  • RDR2’s Cinematic mode returns, with cinematic camera angles while driving.
  • Hair can be cut or shaved at safehouses, and salons offer other styles. Unlike RDR2, there is no waiting for regrowth before choosing something longer.

What Rockstar has not said

  • No radio station list has been published. The line-ups found elsewhere are fan inventions.
  • No count of vehicles, missions or enterable locations.
  • No first-person mode at launch. A 30 fps target was mentioned at the presentation, with no official statement confirming it.
  • Nothing on multiplayer: no date, no player count, no business model.
