Jason and Lucia are written characters, not avatars built at the start. You choose neither their faces nor their build. What you can change, though, changes throughout the game and shows.

These details come from the gameplay presentation held at Rockstar Games' headquarters on 27 and 28 August 2026. They are not Rockstar Games press releases.

Hair, and the lesson learned from Red Dead Redemption 2

Hair is cut or shaved in safehouses. Barbers and salons across Leonida offer different styles.

The detail that matters is elsewhere: unlike Red Dead Redemption 2, you do not have to wait for regrowth to pick a longer cut.

In RDR2, changing your mind about Arthur's hair meant waiting hours of play, or buying a pomade to speed it up. That was simulation for its own sake: the player paid in real time for a purely cosmetic decision. Rockstar Games kept the system and removed the punishment.

The body changes

The characters' bodies change with diet and physical activity. Weight training is available, and the phone's fitness app says when to train.

This is not cosmetic in the strict sense: it is a visible state built over time, and the one aspect of appearance that cannot be bought.

Safehouse fridges can be stocked, and what you take from them has an immediate effect: a beer raises Focus, an apple restores Health.

Sleep and health

Sleep and health are managed. Safehouses are available without buying them, in the spirit of Red Dead Redemption 2's camps, which means somewhere to sleep and eat exists from the start of the game rather than after a first big score.

What the police remember about how you look

This is the point that ties the rest together. In Grand Theft Auto VI the police identify the player by clothing, accessories, group size, vehicle and weapon.

What you wear therefore stops being a preference. Changing clothes after a robbery becomes a useful action, in the same way as changing car. A distinctive haircut is an identifying mark, and the studio has made a point of letting you change it without waiting.

What is not confirmed

  • How many cuts, outfits or tattoos are available. Rockstar Games has published no number.
  • Whether appearance affects NPC reactions outside the wanted system.
  • Whether tattoos or cosmetic surgery exist.
