What Rockstar Games has actually confirmed
Rockstar Games has never published a map size for GTA 6, or for GTA 5. The square-kilometre figures circulating online are fan estimates reconstructed from trailers, and this wiki does not repeat them. This comparison relies only on official Rockstar Games media and on the press presentation held at the studio's headquarters (covered by IGN and others, 27-28 August 2026).
Geographic scope: a state versus a region
GTA 5, Los Santos and Blaine County: one coastal city, a desert, a mountain.
GTA 6, the state of Leonida: Vice City, the Leonida Keys (inspired by the Florida Keys), Grassrivers (the Everglades), Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga. Full guide: all confirmed locations.
The documented difference is not a surface-area multiplier but a change of administrative scale: GTA 5 took place in a city and its hinterland, GTA 6 covers an entire state with distinct biomes, urban, swamp, keys, mountain.
Two protagonists, and a relationship system
GTA 5 had three independent protagonists (Michael, Franklin, Trevor) with open-world character switching.
GTA 6 is built around Jason and Lucia, a couple. The August 2026 presentation confirms:
- instant switching between the two characters;
- sequences played as a duo, simultaneously (robberies, fishing, activities);
- a relationship to maintain (text messages, shared activities) with no possibility of a break-up, since it is tied to the story.
Wanted level: from 5 stars to 6, plus an investigation layer
GTA 5: 5 wanted stars, police visible on the minimap.
GTA 6: the six-star system returns, with far finer identification:
- police recognise you by clothing, accessories, group size, vehicle and weapon;
- a crime is only reported if an NPC witness or a security camera sees it;
- investigators show up at crime scenes;
- police no longer appear on the minimap during a chase.
Some shops refuse to be robbed and can shoot back.
Character life: what GTA 5 did not have
- The body changes (weight loss or gain) with diet and physical activity.
- Sleep and health to manage.
- Haircuts, shaving, working out.
- Safehouses available without buying them, in the spirit of Red Dead Redemption II's camps.
- A fridge to stock, with concrete effects: beer boosts Focus, an apple restores Health.
Vehicles and economy
Rockstar Games has published no vehicle count. What is confirmed are the mechanics:
- theft difficulty varies by vehicle, with stealing mini-games;
- electronic locks, key duplicators and GPS trackers;
- the WAINK app shows theft difficulty and resale value;
- vehicles need fuel, or charging if electric;
- motorcycle helmets are optional;
- money is split between a bank account and a cash wallet, and fences buy stolen goods and flag wanted vehicles.
Full list: every vehicle visible in official media.
Missions and length
- Open-ended missions: several approaches to the same objective.
- Branching narrative choices.
- Some missions are gated until you have enough money.
- The game is split into chapters.
- Length given at the presentation: around 80 hours for the story plus side missions.
Side activities
GTA 5: tennis, golf, yoga, hunting. GTA 6: boxing, basketball, scuba diving, weightlifting, kayaking, circuit races (16 racers, 2 laps), off-road races (12 racers, bikes and quads), night street races (6 racers), timed shooting ranges, parachute jumps, fishing solo or as a couple, the Trunk Challenge, television, sunbathing, robberies, strip clubs and nightclubs. Full detail: all confirmed activities.
Technical details and editions
- Platforms: PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only. No PC version announced to date.
- No first-person mode at launch; a 30 fps target was mentioned at the presentation and has not been confirmed in an official Rockstar Games statement.
- Editions: Standard at $79.99 and Ultimate at $99.99. The Standard edition's pre-order bonus is the Vintage Vice City Pack (themed vehicle, garage, cosmetics).
- Release: 19 November 2026.
Conclusion
The honest comparison is not "twice as big". It is a change in kind: a state instead of a city, a narratively bound duo instead of three loners, a police system built on witnesses and evidence instead of a plain star counter, and a life-simulation layer GTA 5 never had.
