Short answer: no. Grand Theft Auto VI is not coming to PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. Rockstar Games has confirmed two platforms and only two: PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, on 19 November 2026.

This is not partial information waiting to be completed. It is the full list.

Exactly what is confirmed

ConsoleGrand Theft Auto VI?
PlayStation 5Yes
PlayStation 5 ProYes, it is a PS5
Xbox Series XYes
Xbox Series SYes, "Series X|S" includes the Series S
PlayStation 4 / PS4 ProNo
Xbox One / One S / One XNo
Nintendo Switch and Switch 2Not announced
PCNot announced, see our dedicated page

The point people get wrong most often: the Xbox Series S is included. Microsoft's official notation, "Xbox Series X|S", covers both machines. A game announced for Xbox Series X|S runs on the Series S.

Why not the previous generation

Rockstar Games has published no technical explanation, and we are not going to invent one. What can be observed without guessing: the PlayStation 4 launched in 2013 and the Xbox One the same year. Grand Theft Auto V itself came out on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 before being ported to the next generation, and then to the one after that. Rockstar Games made the opposite call this time, without commenting on it.

Backwards compatibility does not help here

Backwards compatibility runs one way: a PlayStation 5 can run PlayStation 4 games, an Xbox Series X can run Xbox One games. The reverse does not exist. A PS4 cannot run a PS5 game, whatever update is installed.

So there is no workaround. No patch, no cut-down version, no announced cloud streaming.

What you need on 19 November 2026

A PlayStation 5, a PlayStation 5 Pro, an Xbox Series S or an Xbox Series X. The Xbox Series S is the cheapest of the four.

The game comes in two editions, Standard and Ultimate. The boxes on sale at French retailers today are "Code in a Box": they contain a download code, not a disc. Prices and retailers are on our where to pre-order Grand Theft Auto VI page.

If Rockstar changes its mind

It would be announced on the Rockstar Newswire, like everything else. We update this page if that happens. As things stand, nothing suggests it is being considered.
