Grand Theft Auto VI is out on 19 November 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. This guide does not recount the game, it prepares you: five confirmed systems work differently from GTA 5, and GTA 5 reflexes will cost you in the first hours.
Everything below comes from verifiable sources, and every unconfirmed point is marked as such.
Last verified: 29 August 2026. This page will be completed at release.
Before 19 November
The platform. PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S. No PS4, no Xbox One, and no PC version announced. The Series S is included: Microsoft's official notation "Xbox Series X|S" covers both machines. The detail is on our pages about GTA 6 on PC and GTA 6 on PS4 and Xbox One.
Preload opens on 12 November 2026, a week before release. That is when to download the game if you bought it digitally. Rockstar Games has given no precise unlock time; we will not guess it.
The editions. Standard and Ultimate, and nothing else: no Deluxe or Collector's edition exists. The boxes on sale at French retailers today are "Code in a Box", holding a download code. Prices and retailers are on our where to pre-order page.
The five systems that do not work like GTA 5
This is the heart of the guide. Every point here is confirmed, and every one breaks a habit.
1. A crime has to be seen to exist
In GTA 5 a star appeared the moment you did something illegal, as though the police knew everything. In GTA 6, a crime is only reported if a witness or a camera sees it.
The wanted system returns to six stars, and the police identify you by your clothing, accessories, group size, vehicle and weapon. Investigators attend crime scenes. And during a chase, the police do not appear on the minimap.
What that changes in practice: looking around before acting becomes a useful action, and so does changing clothes afterwards. An empty alley and a junction at noon are not the same place.
2. Stealing a car is not enough to own it
A stolen vehicle only becomes yours once it is registered, for money. Without that it stays a stolen car, and fences flag wanted vehicles.
The Waink app on the phone shows, for a given car, the tool needed to break in, its resale price and the cost of registering it. Theft difficulty varies by vehicle, with lock-picking mini-games, electronic locks, key duplicators and GPS trackers.
The reflex to lose: taking the nicest car that passes. The maths happens beforehand, on the pavement. The detail is on our page about stolen car registration.
3. Money sits in two pockets, and it is a key
Money is split between a bank account and the cash in your wallet. And some missions only open above a certain amount.
Money is therefore not a score you watch rise, it is what opens what comes next. The confirmed income sources are vehicle theft, robbing businesses, businesses themselves and banks.
4. The body accumulates what you put it through
Food affects weight, weight training visibly builds muscle, and nights spent away from a bed show in the face. Sleep and health are managed.
It is not a penalty and nothing unlocks or closes: the character simply carries what you have put them through. Safehouse fridges can be stocked, and what you take acts immediately: a beer raises Focus, an apple restores Health.
5. The phone is an object, not an interface
Jason and Lucia physically take their phone out and look at it. Using it takes time and is visible. The two protagonists do not share a phone, each with their own apps and accounts.
The confirmed apps: RideMe for a ride, Waink for vehicles, a banking app, a fitness app, messaging and social media. Our page about the phone goes through them.
The settings to open on arrival
Three confirmed options are worth looking at before you start.
The HUD. By default the minimap and the money counter only appear briefly, when they are useful. If you prefer the old way, a permanent classic minimap or a compass can be switched on. Try the default for an hour before changing it: it is a staging choice, not an oversight.
Streamer mode, if you broadcast. It filters music protected by copyright, which avoids a stream being cut or a muted VOD the next day. On GTA 5 the only defence was turning the radio off.
Cinematic mode, the Red Dead Redemption 2 camera, cutting between cinematic angles while you drive. In a game where car journeys are the spine, it is worth at least one trip.
The detail is on our page about Streamer, Photo and Cinematic modes.
The first hours
You have a roof straight away. Several safehouses are available without buying them, in the spirit of Red Dead Redemption II's camps. You do not have to land a big score before having somewhere to sleep and eat.
You play two characters. You can play as a couple or separately, and swap mid-mission, including between driver and passenger. Drive as Jason, switch to Lucia in the passenger seat to use the phone or fire out of the window.
The characters act on their own. During the press demonstration an NPC shoved Jason and Lucia hit her without the player doing anything. You are not the only one steering the situation.
You are not required to rush. The story is split into chapters, missions are open with several approaches and choices that branch the narrative. The press presentation mentioned around 80 hours for the story and side missions.
The GTA 5 reflexes that will cost you
Four habits to unlearn, all following from the systems above.
Robbing a convenience store out of routine. Some businesses refuse the robbery and fight back, and nothing says which before you try. NPCs are more aggressive than before.
Walking around town armed. Player actions have consequences in the world. Going down the street with a rifle gets noticed.
Keeping the same clothes after a job. Since the police identify you by your outfit, your vehicle and your weapon, changing is a game action in the same way as changing car.
Forgetting fuel. Vehicles need fuel or charging. Motorcycle helmets, on the other hand, are optional.
What is not confirmed
- The online mode. Neither its content nor its date.
- A first-person mode, absent at launch.
- 30 frames per second. A 30 fps target was mentioned by the director during the press presentation, without official confirmation from Rockstar Games.
- The number of vehicles, enterable locations or radio stations. Rockstar Games has never published such a figure, and any value found elsewhere is a fan estimate.
Frequently asked questions
Do you need to have played GTA 5 to understand GTA 6?
No. Grand Theft Auto VI is set in the fictional state of Leonida with new characters. No knowledge of the previous games is needed.
How long is GTA 6?
Around 80 hours for the story and side missions, a figure mentioned at the press presentation and not confirmed in a Rockstar Games release.
Can two people play together?
You play two characters, Jason and Lucia, alone. The online mode has been the subject of no announcement, on content or on timing.
Do you have to pre-order to get the Vintage Vice City Pack?
It is included with digital purchases made before 20 November 2026, and with physical pre-orders while supplies last.
Is there a morality system?
No, Rockstar Games has never announced one. The world reacts to your actions, which is different. Our page about the supposed morality system works through the confusion.
