In Grand Theft Auto VI a shop is no longer a menu that opens when you walk through a door. You go in, you take items off the shelves, and the owner may refuse to be robbed.
This page lists what has been shown, business by business. The details come from the gameplay presentation held at Rockstar Games' headquarters on 27 and 28 August 2026. They are not Rockstar Games press releases.
Last verified: 29 August 2026. This page will be completed at release, once the full list of chains is known.
Convenience stores, handled physically
This is the most visible change. In a GTA 6 convenience store you physically take items off the shelves before buying them, in the manner of Red Dead Redemption II.
The difference from GTA 5 is one of kind, not degree. In GTA 5, entering a shop opened a list. Here there is a place, shelves, a route through it, and time spent inside. That time counts: it is also the time a camera can see you, and GTA 6 reports a crime only if a witness or a camera sees it.
Convenience stores are also confirmed robbery targets, solo or as a pair.
Drive-thrus, and the temporary bonus
Drive-thrus are fully functional: you order from the car, and purchases grant temporary stat bonuses.
That is what lifts them out of the scenery. A drive-thru serving food is set dressing; a drive-thru granting a bonus before a mission is a decision. The same principle applies to safehouse fridges, which can be stocked: a beer raises Focus, an apple restores Health.
Barbers and salons
Barbers and salons across Leonida offer different styles. Hair can also be cut or shaved in safehouses.
The detail that matters: unlike Red Dead Redemption 2, you do not have to wait for regrowth to pick a longer cut. Rockstar kept the system and removed the waiting.
This is not purely cosmetic. GTA 6 police identify the player by clothing, accessories, group size, vehicle and weapon. Changing your appearance is a useful action, not vanity. The detail is on our page about hair, body and fitness.
Fences
Fences buy stolen goods. They also flag wanted vehicles, which makes them the contact point between theft and the game economy.
That ties directly to registration: a stolen car is not yours until it is registered for money, and the Waink app shows the resale price and the registration cost before you touch the lock. Our page on stolen car registration works through the maths.
The businesses that fight back
A confirmed point rarely mentioned elsewhere: NPCs are more aggressive, and some businesses refuse the robbery and fight back.
That changes how you read a map. In previous GTAs a convenience store was a convenience store. Here two shops that look identical can behave differently, and nothing says which in advance. A robbery becomes a risk assessed on the spot rather than a routine.
The other confirmed places
- Banks and petrol stations, confirmed robbery targets.
- Nightclubs and strip clubs, with lap dances playable for both protagonists.
- A zoo, visitable, with several species. Jason and Lucia can go there on a date, which improves their relationship.
- Gyms, with weight training visibly building muscle.
- Shooting ranges, with timed courses.
The services reached from the phone
Not every business in Leonida is a place. Four confirmed services are used from the phone, without going anywhere.
RideMe, the ride-hailing app, in the spirit of Uber. You order a driver, then choose to ride along or skip the journey. It is the first time a GTA has offered on-demand transport of this kind.
Waink, the vehicle theft tool. For a given car it shows the tool needed to break in, its resale price and the cost of registering it. It is a shop in reverse: it exists to decide whether something is worth taking.
The banking app, which covers the bank account, separate from the cash in your wallet.
The fitness app, which says when to train and ties into the physical condition system.
Two details make these less incidental than they look. The phone is an object Jason and Lucia take out and look at, not an interface layered over the screen: using it takes time and is visible. And the two protagonists do not share a phone, each having their own apps and their own accounts. The full detail is on our page about the phone and its apps.
What changes compared with GTA 5
| GTA 5 | Red Dead Redemption II | GTA 6 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entering a shop | opens a menu | you move through the place | you move through the place |
| Taking an item | from a list | physically off the shelf | physically off the shelves |
| Time spent inside | none | real | real |
| The owner can refuse | no | no | yes, some fight back |
| Effect of purchases | health, ammunition | health, stamina | temporary stat bonuses |
The row that matters is the last one. A temporary bonus turns a purchase into a question of timing: you do not hit the drive-thru at any moment, you hit it before.
The robbery calculation
Robbing a convenience store in GTA 5 was a routine with no real risk. In GTA 6 three confirmed elements combine to make it a calculation.
The business can fight back. Some refuse the robbery, and nothing says which before you try.
A crime has to be seen to be reported. The police only respond if a witness or a camera observes it. An empty shop at three in the morning is not the same problem as the same shop at noon.
You are identified by what you wear. Clothing, accessories, group size, vehicle and weapon. What you had on going in determines what the police look for coming out, which gives clothes shops and barbers a concrete use.
A robbery becomes preparation rather than impulse. It is the same shift as on car theft, where the Waink app shows the tool needed, the resale price and the registration cost before you touch the lock.
How this page will be completed
On 19 November 2026 we will add what cannot be known before having the game:
1. The list of chains, recorded in game, with their locations.
2. Which ones fight back, which will only be known by trying.
3. The exact prices and bonuses of the drive-thrus and convenience stores.
Every addition will be dated, so it stays clear what comes from the August 2026 press presentation and what comes from the finished game.
The money, and where it sits
Two separate pockets: a bank account and the cash in your wallet. The confirmed income sources are vehicle theft, robbing businesses, businesses themselves and banks.
Some missions only open above a certain amount. Money is not a score, it is a key.
What is not confirmed
- The list of chains. Rockstar Games has published no brand names and no count of businesses. Any list found elsewhere is a reconstruction.
- The number of enterable locations. No official figure exists.
- Whether businesses can be bought as in GTA Online.
- Prices.
Rockstar Games has said nothing on those four.
